Mother’s Day.

Mother’s Day is celebrated worldwide, with very few exceptions.

With a history dating back to ancient Greece, honouring Rhea, mother of the gods Poseidon, Zeus and Hades, but with the arrival of the Roman Empire, the holiday was transformed and renamed Hilaria.

And when Christianity came, it was adapted to their faith and beliefs, paying homage to the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus.

Despite the above, we owe the current state of the celebration to the social and religious movement of Julia Ward Howe, an activist ahead of her time.

An advocate of women’s rights, abolitionist of slavery, and who promoted a movement in Boston in the 19th century to reconcile mothers who clashed in the American Civil War.

Her Mother’s Day Proclamation, full of love and sincerity, is well known and failed to forge a recognition of the mothers of the time. It was not until almost fifty years later that the initiative was taken up by another woman, Anna Jarvis, who officially established Mother’s Day in 1914.

But it did not begin to be celebrated in Spain until 1965, due to the commercial interest of a well-known department store. Purely commercial, it has travelled through time to the present day, and although from Daring Light, a perfumery that lives off sales, we would like all mothers and women to be the object of affection and gifts regardless of the date.

A world where the big decisions were made by women would be much more beautiful and loving. Men’s patriarchy leads to testosterone conflicts turning into unnecessary wars and loss of life, only for geopolitical interests. And that is why we have to honour our mothers and women in general in our lives.
