Lignum Vitae is inspired by the discovery of 17th century watchmaker John Harrison, who used Lignum Vitae in the intricate workings of sea clocks, as the wood is exceptionally hard and resistant to corrosion in the salty sea air.

Taking inspiration from Harrison’s innovative use of materials, unexpected notes are blended to produce a multi-faceted and intriguing fragrance.
Warm, metallic aspects are accentuated in allusion to Lignum Vitae’s nickname, “ironwood”; the characteristic citrus and spicy aroma of Lignum Vitae itself and special emphasis is placed on the salty air caused by the breaking of brass marine chronometers.

The perfume was designed as a symbolic representation of the intricate workings of Harrison’s time machines, but also as a suggestion of the power of scent to transport us through time.

Perfumer Julie Marlowe took it upon herself to combine these enigmatic aspects in an unexpected and intriguing way.
